A lecture by Francesco Ciabattoni
Dante’s Divine Comedy is rich with medieval theatrical elements like dramatic dialogue, liturgical drama, music, and dance. Prof. Ciabattoni will highlight Inferno as a space for dialogue, combining sacred drama and Carnival culture, Purgatorio's liturgical drama rituals, and Paradiso as a cosmic theater that brings theological ideas to life through performance. Historical and philological attention to the text will provide a solid scholarly foundation for this presentation.
Francesco Ciabattoni is Professor of Italian and Director of Global Medieval Studies Program at Georgetown University. He is the author of Dante's Performance: Music, Dance and Drama in the Commedia (2024)
