The Sibyls

A lecture by Mark Roberts

The Sibyls of the ancient world – ten are listed by the Roman writer Varro – were seers and prophetesses who interpreted the wishes of the god Apollo. Virgil and Ovid wrote about them. Their reputation as wise women survived into medieval times, because they were held to have predicted the coming of Christ. Michelangelo Buonarroti painted five Sibyls on the ceiling of the Sistine Chapel, alternating them with Old Testament prophets. ‘Sibyl’ became reasonably popular as a Christian name. Mark Roberts surveys the field of sibylline lore, and shows many beautiful paintings.
