The Nativity Midwives of Florence
A lecture by Jane Salvage

Have you heard about the two legendary midwives at the birth of Jesus? One of them, Salome, was known for her part in a strange, disturbing tale of Jesus’ first miracle. The most famous midwife ever, she became a cult figure and later a saint. Inspired by a lecture at the British Institute by Mark Roberts, Jane Salvage set out on an unexpected journey through Florence and far beyond, discovering striking images of these women hidden in frescoes, paintings, and sculptures in museums, palaces and churches. . What started as a hobby slowly grew into The Midwife’s Book of Hours: part art history, part detective story, and part meditation who gets to tell or suppress women's stories, resonating with the challenges women worldwide face today as mothers, midwives and leaders.
