The Medici Chapels Reconstructed
A lecture by Alan Pascuzzi

When you visit the Medici Chapels, designed by Michelangelo at the church of San Lorenzo, you will likely be struck by the sombre and brooding atmosphere of the space with its grey pietra serena, white stucco architecture and powerful Michelangelo sculptures. Michelangelo, however, did not fully complete his decorative scheme for the Medici Chapels and his idea sketches for the space suggest that he had planned for additional sculptures and frescoes. Based on close study of Michelangelo's idea sketches for the chapels, this talk will attempt to formulate a plausible reconstruction of what Michelangelo originally wanted the Medici Chapels to look like, and present an idea of how the chapels would have been seen had he completed his decorative scheme.
