The Jews, the Medici, and the Making of the Ghetto of Florence
A lecture by Piergabriele Mancuso

The Florence ghetto was formally established in September 1570 by Cosimo I de' Medici, officially following repeated violations by some bankers of the regulations governing interest-bearing loans. What underlay this measure, however, was in reality something far more complex— geopolitical and diplomatic macinations, primarily in relation to the Pope, from whom Cosimo I would receive the title of Grand Duke. This talk will examine the political genesis and social consequences of the 1570 segregation decree, which established the Jewish Ghetto in Florence for the first time.
Dr. Piergabriele Mancuso is the Director of the Eugene Grant Jewish Program at the Medici Archive Project. In 2017 he launched the Ghetto Mapping Project, a major research project aiming to reconstruct virtually the ancient Jewish ghetto of Florence on the basis of archival-textual evidence.
