While the House of Medici dominates the popular imagination of the Renaissance, their historic ascendancy was masterfully co-authored by the brilliant, aristocratic Tornabuoni. Join us at the British Institute of Florence as we chart the extraordinary evolution of this dynasty. Beginning with their blood-soaked origins as medieval warrior-knights, we will trace the radical 1393 political rebranding that secured their rise as an elite banking powerhouse. Ultimately, this lecture considers their enduring legacy as multimedia patrons of the visual, literary, and performing arts—proving that the Tornabuoni did not merely witness Florence’s rebirth, but contributed directly and immensely to it, helping to shape local and global culture forever.
