The Church of Santa Felicita: Sixteen Centuries of Metamorphosis

A lecture by Elon Danziger

The church of Santa Felicita stands at the threshold of the Oltrarno, a site of Christian devotion, community, art, and music since late antiquity. This lecture explores the many transformations the church has undergone over sixteen centuries, shaped by changing architectural forms, communities of faith, political circumstances, and artistic sensibilities. Charting a course through these layers of history, art historian Elon Danziger explores how Santa Felicita has thrived and suffered alongside the city.  Particular attention will be given to the convent and the generations of women who shaped the church’s spiritual, artistic, and musical life for nearly 800 years. Rarely seen images and evocative musical passages, together with recent reconstructions and new hypotheses, illuminate the enduring presence and quiet power of this often overlooked sacred space.
