A lecture by Timothy Verdon
Western painting abandoned the eastern (Byzantine) style beginning in the late 13th century, specifically with the fresco cycle at Assisi depicting the life of Saint Francis, attributed to Giotto and his collaborators. This talk discusses that series of images and other representations of the saint in light of their impact on the European concept of art. Mons. Timothy Verdon is the Director of the Opera del Duomo museum.
