Machiavelli Misunderstood: the Man, the Prophet, the Myth
A lecture by Fabrizio Ricciardelli
Machiavelli Misunderstood: the Man, the Prophet, the Myth
This lecture explores the multifaceted legacy of one of history’s most provocative thinkers.
As a Man, Niccolò Machiavelli was a Florentine diplomat, political theorist, and historian whose career rose and fell with the turbulence of Renaissance politics, leaving him marked by both public service and personal misfortune.
As a Prophet, he articulated with startling clarity the enduring realities of power, analysing the mechanisms of authority, persuasion and necessity that continue to shape political thought and practice.
And as a Myth, his name has been reduced to a symbol of cunning amorality, ignoring the range and subtlety of his political and social thinking to create a dark adjective for all time.
Machiavelli: a man of his time, a visionary beyond his age, and a mythologized figure of both infamy and influence.
