Lorenzo Ghiberti’s Gates of Paradise, made for Florence Baptistery in 1425-1452, are among the most famous works of the Early Renaissance. No one knows who authored their rich iconographical programme, though, or whether ordinary viewers were able to understand it. This talk illustrates the questions and proposes answers, devoting special attention to the religious meaning of Ghiberti’s masterpiece.
