Illuminating the Past

A workshop to create an illuminated letter

Saturday 23 May, 14:00-18:00

This beautiful decorated initial letter A, completes the word adonay meaning Lord and comes from the so-called 'Corale G' part of a group of chorales from San Lucchese in Poggibonsi, 45 kilometers from Florence, which were stolen and then recovered by the Carabinieri. It was originally part of a medieval liturgical book containing the liturgy between the feast of Pentecost and the first Sunday of Advent. It was stolen in 1932 and again in 1982 and eventually recovered by the Italian police.

In this workshop,  Alison Salmon will provide you with all of the necessary materials and guidance you need to make a copy of this letter.

The 23-carat gold leaf and goat-skin parchment are included together with period pigments in shells and a step-by-step guide to allow you to finish or recreate the letter at home.

Come and relax for an afternoon away from the crowds and enjoy the meditative and spiritual process of illumination!
