A lecture by Alessio Assonitis
In this lecture Alessio Assonitis intends to address Cosimo I de' Medici's involvement in sixteenth-century book culture. His correspondence in the Medici Grand Ducal archive indicates that he was engaged, whenever possible, with all aspects of this literary process. Aside from reading and annotating texts, Cosimo actively collected, gifted, borrowed, and lent volumes; revised manuscripts; sponsored and oversaw intellectual projects; and enforced regulatory control and, occasionally, outright censorship.
Alessio Assonitis is the Director of the Medici Archive Project in Florence.
