Age and artists in the Renaissance

A look at the correlation of age and progression of artistic style

A lecture by Alan Pascuzzi

The concept of age in the Renaissance was seen as a natural span from youth, rise to maturity, and gradual decline. This talk will explore various works of Renaissance art in painting and sculpture in an attempt to identify the correlation of age and progression of artistic style from youthful apprentice to wise master and beyond. Through an analysis of works by such artists as Masaccio, Donatello, Botticelli, Leonardo and Michelangelo and others, the talk will investigate how aging influenced Renaissance artists, physically, spiritually and, by consequence, artistically.
