Who we Are
Bridging Cultures to Transform Lives
In the heart of the Oltarno, Florence’s most authentic neighbourhood, in a 16th century palazzo overlooking the river, lies an oasis of quiet authority: The British Institute of Florence. For more than 100 years il British (as the Florentines affectionately call us) has offered residents of Florence and international visitors outstanding opportunities for personal enrichment through participation in educational, cultural and social activities.
For the Florentines il British is the place to learn English and to engage with UK culture.
For international residents and visitors we offer excellent courses in Art History and the Italian language, and a rich programme of cultural and social events in our beautiful heritage Library. It is the perfect place for visitors and new arrivals who wish to meet people, get involved and find the
inside track to Florentine language, art and culture.
The British Institute of Florence is a small independent non-profit, born and bred in Florence. As a respected institution woven into the fabric of the city, we are proud of our growing Social Outreach programme, teaching English to Florence’s most disadvantaged young people – a skill that can
transform their life chances.
We are registered as a Charity in England, but receive no public funding whatsoever.
