Centenary Programme 2017


  • 24 September 2016

100 days from the Centenary. We began the countdown at the Società dei Canottieri. Jill Morris CMG, British Ambassador to Italy announced the donation of € 150 000 by Ferragamo SpA to restore and renovate the Harold Acton Library. The Mayor of Florence Dario Nardella communicated his decision to confer at the British Institute of Florence the highest honour of the city: the Fiorino d'Oro.














  • 7 February 2017, reprise in Florence on 17 May 2017

The Harold Acton lecture in London. This event hosted by the Italian Ambassador in London included a lecture by Jeremy Boudreau, Head of History of Art at the British Institute of Florence entitled: “The Harold Acton lecture: Renaissance Tapestries and Textile Diplomacy." The event was sponsored by Rocco Forte Hotels.

Jeremy Boudreau delivered an extended version of this lecture in the Harold Acton Library on Wednesday 17 May at 18:00 as part of the cultural programme for Library members.

Award of “Fiorino d’Oro della Città di Firenze” by the Mayor of Florence to the British Institute of Florence. The “Fiorino d’Oro” (Gold Florin) is awarded to Italian and foreign citizens who have honoured the city and served the national and international community.

Issue of a national postage stamp by the Ministero dello Sviluppo Economico. The event took place in Rome. For additional details click here.



  • 18-23 September

“100 Treasures of Florence”.  A special ten-session History of Art course to celebrate one hundred Florentine masterpieces with visits to museums and monuments throughout the city. For further information click here.











  • 26 September 2017

The British Institute of Florence held its 100th Birthday Party at the Canottieri Club in Florence. A special cake was commissioned to mark its anniversary.

  • 2017 – all year

Centenary Lecture Series. The 2017 summer and autumn seasons were made possible by generous donations from Maria Manetti Shrem and from Alessandra and Michael Griffiths through the Michael Griffiths Trust in memory of their son John (Aug 4, 1970 - April 4, 2015). The series included talks by the political scientist Richard Rose; the literary editor Lennie Goodings, of Virago Press; our own archivist, Alyson Price; and Professor Nicholas Brownlees of Florence University. As ever, variety is the keynote. The full programme is available here.


  • 7 October 2017

Tea with a View. As part of the celebrations for the 30th anniversary of “Room with a View”, the British Institute of Florence hosted James Ivory, Helena Bonham Carter, Julian Sands, Rupert Graves and other members of the cast and crew for a Tea with a View in the Harold Acton Library.

BRITISH 100 Film Festival: Twice a month with our partner, the historic and beautiful Odeon cinema in Florence, we presented films highlighting emerging and prize-winning British directors.

  • 14 December 2017

Yes we passed! We were joined by the Deputy Mayor in Palazzo Vecchio to celebrate the achievements of the Florentine state schools in University of Cambridge exams, which we have been offering for 70 years as an exam centre for the Cambridge Assessment English.
