Recognition of UK education certificates for use in Italy
Whether you are British or Italian, British educational qualifications are not automatically recognised in Italy unless they fall into certain professional categories agreed within the EU.
The procedure to obtain recognition of your qualifications is lengthy and is divided into three different steps. We can only assist you with Step 1. However, please check with the institution or organisation who is requesting your document what they require from you.
- Declaration of authenticity
- Legalisation of the document - Apostille - this is issued by the Foreign and Commonwealth Office in London
- 3. Declaration of Equal Value - Dichiarazione di Valore - which is issued by the Italian Consulate in the UK.
Step 1 - Declaration of authenticity OR certification of an original
a) Declaration of authenticity of a copy of a document
You will need to send us a photocopy of your document, together with copies of the documents requested on Form A. We will then check the authenticity of the document with the institution concerned and make a declaration of authenticity on the copy which we will then return to you.
€25 if you collect the document in person
€35 if you require us to return the copy to you by registered post If you are sending more than one document you only need pay €35 for the first document and €25 for the rest

If you need authentication of GCSE (O level) or A level results, you need to contact the examination board directly and ask them to send confirmation of your results to us. There are currently 5 examination boards operating in England, Wales and Northern Ireland so please click on the link below to see which one you need to contact. Once you have established which is the relevant examination board please contact us so that we know to expect the results and we can then advise as to the payment to be made. We charge €50 for authenticating up to 3 A level or GCSE certificates and €10 for each certificate after that. If you wish us to return the authenticated certificates to you by post please add a further €10 to your payment.

b) Certification of a copy of an original document
You will need to produce the original document to us. We will take a photocopy and certify that it is a true copy of the original and return both the original and the certified copy to you. We do not carry out any checks on the authenticity of the document and do not give any statement of authenticity when we certify an original document so please check that certification is all you require before making the request to us.
€10 if you present the document in person

Step 2 - Legalisation - Apostille
Some institutions in Italy require you to obtain legalisation of your document by the Foreign Office in London confirming that the signature we have placed on the document is genuine. Please check whether this is required and if so you will need to send the document to The Foreign Office.

Please download the covering letter you need to send to the Foreign & Commonwealth Office in order to get the Apostille.

Step 3 - Declaration of equal value
You may also need to obtain a declaration of equal value from the Italian Consulate in London. This will normally be the Consulate nearest to the place where you have studied.
