The Charles H Cecil Studios is a school of fine art in the naturalistic tradition and one of the few ateliers in Europe to offer training in the classical techniques of drawing and painting. The curriculum stems directly from the major realist ateliers of 19th century Paris. Charles H Cecil was first trained in these techniques by R H Ives Gammell of Boston, whose teacher William Paxton had studied with Jean-Leon Gerome at the 'Ecole des Beaux Arts' in Paris. The Studios are located in the most historic Florentine atelier still in active use. Formerly the church of San Raffaello Arcangelo, it was designed as a studio complex by Lorenzo Bartolini in the early nineteenth century. Bartolini, pupil of Jacques Louis David and associate of J A D Ingres, was one of the leading sculptors of the time. By 1850 the atelier passed to Bartolini's colleague, Pasquale Romanelli, and has since witnessed generations of artistic activity. The Studios offer an ideal working space illuminated by the high, large windows of the former church.
