Women in Renaissance Art

For the month of March we are marking International Women’s Day with a five day course on the theme of women in Renaissance art.

 

Through lectures, guided visits to museums and churches as well as informal discussions, we explore both the religious and secular – ranging from the changing image of the Virgin Mary to betrothal portraits, women as patrons of art, the erotic, and art for the home.

Florentine Frescoes

An exploration of the frescoed masterpieces of Florentine art. Several classes are held onsite in museums, galleries and churches to see first-hand the works of Giotto, Masaccio and Ghirlandaio, and to investigate fresco materials and techniques, and the challenges of modern restoration.

The English and the Americans in Florence

A unique one-day programme that bring to life the cultural experience of the Anglo-Americans in Florence. The day is introduced by an expert lecturer and the British Institute archivist who put the day in context, in the splendid setting of the Harold Acton Library of the British Institute of Florence.

Experiencing the Renaissance Workshop

A week-long hands-on course exploring the major Renaissance drawing and painting techniques on-site throughout Florence and in the studio using authentic materials and methods taken from 14th century art treatises. No artistic ability is required for this course.

Exploring the Macchiaioli

Enter the world of I Macchiaioli, the group of mid-19th century Tuscan painters who challenged the academic conventions with their progressive methods and subject matter. The 4-day course concludes with a studio demonstration of their techniques, and a visit to the Palazzo Strozzi show:  'Americans in Florence: Sargent and the American Impressionists'.
