The British Institute of Florence is the perfect place to study the history of Italian art. We combine lectures with on-site visits focusing on Italian art from the Middle Ages to the High Renaissance, with an emphasis on Florentine art.

The Dawn of the Renaissance

Study the revolutionary art and architecture of Florence and Tuscany during the 13th and 14th centuries, exploring, among others, the works of Cimabue, Giotto, Duccio, Simone Martini, Giovanni Pisano and Arnolfo di Cambio.

This is a one month course and the first in our 3 month Renaissance Series programme.

The Early Italian Renaissance

Study the groundbreaking artists and architects of 15th century Florence, including Donatello, Brunelleschi, Masaccio and Botticelli, set against the rise of the Medici family, Humanism and the discovery of the new world.

This is a one month course which can be taken as part of the 3 month Renaissance Series programme.

The Italian High Renaissance

Study the rise of this legendary style which focuses on the works of Michelangelo, Leonardo and Raphael, and the dramatic new achievements in Rome, Venice and the Renaissance courts of Northern Italy.

This is a one month course which can be taken as part of the 3 month Renaissance Series programme.

An overview of the spectacular achievements of Florentine artists and architects over 300 years. We explore the historical context that made Florence the birthplace of the Renaissance.
