How much spending money should I bring?
A pizza and drink will cost you between 12 – 18 euro depending on where you go. It is possible to get a plate of pasta for as little as 4 euro but it can cost a lot more in fancy restaurants. An average price meal will cost about 18 – 25 euro. You can buy good quality food cheaply in the market and it is possible to eat extremely well for about 75 – 80 euro per person per week. Train travel is good value in Italy and Florence is well-placed to reach the major centres eg Rome, Naples and Venice relatively easily. Budget airlines also make other European destinations accessible. Cosmetics, medicines and toiletries are expensive compared to the US and UK so you are advised to bring those items with you if your luggage allowance permits. We consider that a weekly budget of 150 – 200 euro should be sufficient to cover your additional needs, including some travel, while you are in Florence but please bear in mind that you may need to allow also for utility bills if these are not included in your rental. These are much higher in Italy than in the US.
